![]() ![]() ![]() This idea itself is very scary… Vi lives in a world full of rules and constant supervision with no room from self development. Vi and also other society members are brainwashed constantly to make them good and loyal citizens. The premise indeed sounds super interesting and I think the combination of dystopian with Sci Fi but also with a bit of magic could have been pretty awesome. The premise sounds amazing and I expected a very awesome dystopian Sci Fi magic mix novel that I would absolutely enjoy. Super pretty cover! I Love the butterfly in the ice, I love white, I love the simplicity. If you look at it this book has everything I expect from an awesome book. This is a game of control or be controlled. Vi can’t quite trust Jag and can’t quite resist him, but she also can’t give up on Zenn. ![]() Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous–everything Zenn’s not. Vi can’t leave Zenn in the Thinkers’ hands, but she’s wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn…and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi’s future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.īut the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they’re set on convincing Vi to become one of them…starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi knows the Rule: Girls don’t walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. Published June 7th 2011 by Simon & Schuster ![]() ![]() ![]() The concept was fabulous, I can't fault it at all - living in a dystopian Earth, teenage girls have been brought up in a society where only women exist. However, the execution wasn't quite what I expected. My two favourite genres - LGBT and dystopian - mixed together it was practically my idea of heaven. As they face the unthinkable, the only thing they have left to believe in is their love for each other. ![]() ![]() The Doctors who rule Society want to silence Rubric and Salmon Jo. What does it take to survive in a world built on lies? ![]() ![]() The book has been optioned by Lionsgate and producer David Heyman with a script co-written by Aslan and Oscar- screenwriter, James Schamus. ![]() Aslan argues that Jesus was a political, rebellious and eschatological (end times) Jew whose proclamation of the coming kingdom of God was a call for regime change, for ending Roman hegemony over Judea and the corrupt and oppressive aristocratic priesthood. It is a historical account of the life of Jesus that analyzes religious perspectives on Jesus as well as the creation of Christianity. ![]() Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth is a book by Iranian-American writer and scholar Reza Aslan. ![]() ![]() A cupcake shop would be my dream place to work! Animals are another big part of the book. The cupcake shop play a pretty big role in the book and I loved reading about the cupcakes and how they made them and everything. I loved how everything worked out in the end. As Penny is only thirteen romance isn't a big part of the book, but her crush, Marcus is really sweet. Blake and Tally are great characters and are definitely people I would want to be friends with. Penny and her two new friends get back at Charity and her cronies in a cool and original way. ![]() Charity, the snotty, popular girl, plays a lot of pranks on Penny, like putting spoiled milk in her locker. Hepler did add some new twists to this plot line that really added to the appeal of the story. Although the plot was one that is a little overdone- the new girl getting picked on by the popular girl because the cute boy likes said new girl. There were times when she was dealing with a lot, but I could understand where she was coming from. ![]() She was dealing with a problem that many of today's kids are- divorce. Penny was a great main character and was really relatable. ![]() ![]() Plus, there are dragons, curses, and a sassy talking paper bird. ![]() The story is loosely based on Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Wild Swans” but Lim fashions the basics of the tale into something that feels fresh and exciting, a story of identity, family, and the power of finding your own voice (even if you can’t use your physical one). Much like her earlier novels, it features a headstrong heroine, a dash of magic, and surprises on every other page. A beautifully written fantasy that effortlessly incorporates East Asian legends and folklore, this is a book that definitely stands out from the other YA titles hitting shelves this summer. Sic Crimson Cranes is the latest novel by Elizabeth Lim, author of the popular The Blood of Stars duology. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Shay's insecurities about navigating millennial adulthood have roots in my experience, too. She's also spent her whole life wanting to work in public radio because her late father loved it so much, while I didn't discover it until high school. ![]() While she's always dreamed of hosting her own show, I was more comfortable behind the scenes. The most exciting part of writing this book was how Shay grew into someone with her own history and aspirations. I also reported a handful of stories and produced a weekly pre-recorded show for Seattle's KUOW. ![]() "We both studied journalism in college, and at the beginning of the book, she produces a talk show similar to the one I worked on in my early twenties. "Shay's journey mirrors mine in a lot of ways," she tells me via email. Naturally, they fall for each other.Īuthor Rachel Lynn Solomon based the story partly on her own experience. Office rivals Shay and Dominic - she's a veteran producer, he's a cocky J-school grad who won't shut up about his master's degree - end up having to pose as exes to host a new dating and relationships show for their struggling station. When I found out about The Ex Talk, I absolutely had to read it (even though, as a rule, I don't love contemporary romances) because it's set at a Pacific Northwest public radio station. ![]() ![]() Men still hold power over females and are prized for their physical abilities. She knows she was born human, why does it not bother her that she eats other humans? Also, the Mer-world seems to be female-centric, with Queens or High Mothers as the supreme rulers and female Callers doing the hunting to provide food. The fact that the mer-people largely subsist on humans was very interesting, but the implications of eating humans was not really explored – especially by the protagonist Ia. I was able to easily read the story, but I think there was a lot of room for development of the Mer-world. It is very fast-paced, which is good and bad. Just so readers are aware, this a novella, not a full-length novel. The cover is very well-done and was a big influence on my decision to agree to read this book. ![]() First of all, I really want to applaud Quirky Bird for the beautiful cover they designed. ![]() ![]() Writing with breakneck narration and rapid-fire dialogue, Bernhard Aichner is poised to follow in the steps of Jo Nesbo, Camilla Läckberg, and Jussi Adler-Olsen to become Europe’s new breakout star in crime fiction.
