There is a slight continuation from The 'Lovely' Past which may please some readers. The creepy nature of character development is a surprise I shall leave for you. You're never fully sure how exactly it will turn out, which is just part of the reason why this novel is such a page-turner. The relationship between the old dears and their neighbours is tested throughout this novel. The old sayings they use, some of which I haven't heard in decades, are amusing and add to the brilliant character dynamics. That's mainly due to the matter-of-fact attitude of the main two characters, who lure the reader in with their zest for 'keeping the streets clean'. Murder should not be this funny, yet it is in so many ways here. The 'Lovely' Old Dears is a throbbing gristle of a read, with a dark comedy overlay. Following David Richards' debut novel, The 'Lovely' Past, I approached this book with much excitement. ![]() |
